Why can't we use cellular phones in hospitals?

Over 80 percent of wireless phones are analog phones, which researchers say do not pose a health risk. Some digital phones, however, have been found to cause interference with some pacemakers. Most pacemakers do not continually send a pulse to the heart, therefore the radio frequency interference does not necessarily mean a threat to life. Pacemaker users are aware of the potential for interference from certain electromagnetic devices. This would be no different from the caution pacemaker users exercise around equipment such as MRI machines. The effect of cellular phones on pacemakers is being studied. If you have questions about using a cellular phone near a pacemaker, consult your doctor and your user's manual. Keep in mind that the interference is caused by digital phones.
